I’ll be perfectly honest — even after all these years as a photographer, maternity sessions make me nervous. I’m not huge on posing people to begin with, because I’ve always preferred a more natural look. You know, like everyone is just sort of hanging out. And with maternity photos, there will always be some posing involved. So how do you approach it without getting too cheesy?
Well, I’ve personally learned to just let the cheese happen. Not because I will use those shots in the end, but because it helps the couple laugh together and loosen up. Then we can quickly get to the good part where we’re actually just hanging out.
I really, really enjoyed taking photos of this couple. They were high school sweethearts, now married and expecting their first little baby. Ah, it’s the most magical time! They were game for everything and after the standard shots in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, they let me take them to my favorite corners of the park and we spent a good chunk of time finding some shade in New Orleans Square and making that magic. I absolutely loved it and wish them all the best with their growing family!
