When I started doing vacation photography, I really didn’t know what to expect when it came to my clients. I would be meeting people from all over the country and couldn’t help but wonder if our personalities would click. So far, it has been the best experience I’ve had as a photographer! We get to know each other quickly and have so much fun in the process. I feel a unique and special connection to each one of the families whose vacations I have crashed.
I do have to say a few extra words about this family in particular though. I do believe this marked the first time I’ve ever cried at Disneyland (or with a client for that matter!) Within minutes of meeting them, I was tearing up. This mother’s courage brought me to my knees, in a way that only another mother can understand. You see, they lost their beautiful baby girl to cancer just a year before this. She was doing well, home from the hospital and suddenly took a turn for the worse, passing away in their home unexpectedly.
As I listened to their story, I could only look at her and hug her and cry and say I was sorry. The pain was palpable. Yet, the strength shined through like laser beams, in their eyes and smiles. The love they have for each other and the closeness I felt being with them was overwhelming. Reminding me to not take life for granted. To be grateful for what we have while we have it.
I know this family came into my life for a reason. Even though we don’t keep in touch on a regular basis, I think about them often. I watch their blog closely as they expand their family through adoption. And I look forward to the day they return from Hawaii for another Disneyland trip, and I get to see them again. In the most sincere way, I thank you for letting me be a part of your day.
